Artworks as traps (between art and anthropology)

In recent decades, there has been a proliferation of theoretical and methodological advancements, as well as experimentation at the intersection of contemporary art and anthropology. These developments encompass various aspects of research, production and communication of artistic or anthropological work, or forms that refuse to be classified in one or the other field. How can anthropology contribute to our understanding and experience of artworks, art-related spaces and the art world? In this seminar, we will discuss intersections between the two fields. Some concepts to be presented are: artworks as “traps”, knowledge through making, the artist as ethnographer, multimodality, and more.

The seminar addresses anybody interested in the dialogue between art and anthropology. It will take place in English at the cinema room of the museum.

The presentation will be led by Sofia Grigoriadou (PhD Social Anthropology, MA Visual Arts), contract associate curator for the MoCA Skopje Discursive Program and co-founder of TWIXTlab, a laboratory between art, anthropology, and the everyday based in Athens.
