Lecture by Rastko Močnik on Contemporary Capitalism and Art

On Friday, June 26, starting at 7:00 PM, Rastko Močnik will give a lecture within the framework of the Interdisciplinary Program. The lecture is entitled “Contemporary Capitalism and Contemporary Art as Practice and as Institution”.

Rastko Močnik is a Slovenian sociologist, cultural theorist and literary theorist, one of the most significant intellectuals from the former Yugoslavia. His research focuses on the relationships between culture, ideology, capitalism and political transformations in post-socialist societies

He received his doctorate in 1975 in Paris, at the Université Paris Nanterre, and then in 1983 at the University of Ljubljana. Within the framework of the academic program Fulbright Program, in 1985 he stayed for postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. With the honorary title of doctor honoris causa, he teaches contemporary social theories at the University of Ljubljana, at the Faculty of Media and Communications and at the Plovdiv University “Paisij Hilendarski”.

He is one of the most influential and politically engaged intellectuals in the former Yugoslavia. In the period from 1987 to 1989, he was the vice-rector of the University of Ljubljana. In addition to numerous scientific and professional gatherings, he also organized the international conference “Mobility and Solidarity in Contemporary Europe”.

He has published a large number of works in the fields of political philosophy, sociology, semiology, discourse analysis, theory of ideology, literary theory and theoretical psychoanalysis. In recent years, he has focused on issues of globalization, political and social discourse, the theory of cognitive capitalism and the theory of ideology.

His publications include the following titles: Theory with Ideology, Faculty of Media and Communications, Belgrade, 2019; Writings on Contemporary Capitalism, Arkzin, Zagreb, 2016; On the Writing of History, Založba Cf., Ljubljana, 2016; Confrontations: Histories, Transitions, Beliefs, Panorama, Sofia, 2001; Theories for Our Time: Claude Levi-Strauss, Marcel Moss, Emil Dirkem, Magor, 1999; How Much Fascism?: Debates on Postcommunism, Arkzin, Zagreb, 1995; Research on the Sociology of Literature, Ljubljana, 1984.

The lecture is organized in cooperation with the Faculty of Fine Arts – Skopje, University “St. Cyril and Methodius” in Skopje.
