Romani Contemporary Art Against Structural Inequality

On November 10, at 8 p.m., at the Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje, the artist Dan Turner will give a lecture with a physical presence. The title of the lecture is “Romani contemporary art against structural inequality”, and a conversation with the artist will be conducted by Artan Sadiku.

Dan Turner is one of the artists whose work will be exhibited in the exhibition All that we have in common, organized by the Museum of contemporary art in Skopje and Manifesta Biennial. We will discuss the artistic practice of Dan through the struggle which has always been about how to make art that did not deny his heritage. It’s a meditation on the past, the present, and the future, looking at how Romani Contemporary Art can support the Roma community and its values, and provide an alternative form of activism in tackling structural inequality. More and more the richness of this culture inspires new ideas for work, and he has realized that his culture and identity are his practice.

Dan Turner is an artist and educator from London, a Romani born in Kent whose family is still based in South East London with its many close associations with Romani culture. He trained at Central St Martins School of Art where he completed a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art (Sculpture). His work crosses media and includes sculpture, video, and painting. His work Seeds of Healing was shown in FUTUROMA at the Venice Biennale 2019. In 2020 he exhibited in Wales, in the Gypsy Maker Project, supported by the Romani Cultural and Arts Company, and in Berlin at the Kaidikhas Gallery. He completed an online performance and installation commission for Meadow Arts, UK, connected with caravans and Romani life now. His video work, Patteran was selected for the online 50th Roma Congress Celebration Exhibition, 2021. His film Glamour was shown as part of the Estuary Festival 2021, UK. His poster works have been shown as part. 2nd Roma Biennale in Berlin. He has recently taken part in Art and Healing, A Roma Contribution to Europe at Schafhof – European House of Art Upper Bavaria. He has also contributed to the ERIAC RomaMoma blog. His next exhibition will be in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje in November 2022.
