Velimir Zhernovski will represent North Macedonia at the 61. Venice Biennale

The project “Pietà in the Emergency Blankets” by artist Velimir Zhernovski and the Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje will represent Macedonia at the 61st International Exhibition Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition will take place from May 9 to November 22, 2026.

Velimir Zhernovski was born in Skopje in 1981, where he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 2005. He works in drawings, videos and photographs, through which he explores changes in urban culture and issues related to sexuality and gender identity, as well as issues related to the constant transition, both personal and of the identity of his own generation. He has held several solo exhibitions in Macedonia and Europe and has participated in several international projects and cultural collaborations. Since 2008, he has been the co-founder and president of F.R.I.K. (Formation for the Development of Initiatives in Culture), a program that works to motivate socially engaged cultural production free from all kinds of stereotypes and prejudices.
