Kale, Cultural Fortress

Kale, Cultural Fortress

07. – 21. 10. 2016

Kale – cultural fortress is a project that treats the spatial planning of the central Skopje hill called Kale covering an area from the medieval fortress to the French military cemetery. There are two important cultural monuments dominating the hill: the medieval fortress and the Museum of Contemporary Art. However, despite their considerable potentials to attract a wide range of visitors throughout the year, these two sites exist in mutually isolated spaces, with vast uncultivated park area, surrounded by other completely inadequate and substandard buildings, i.e., without any visible signs of urban planning.

The project aims to draw public attention to this valuable area in the heart of downtown Skopje and open room for public and expert discussion about the direction of its future urban design. As a direct beneficiary of this area, the Museum of Contemporary Art is interested in solutions that will contribute to improving the performance of the institution. In this context, cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture was initiated three years ago whose outcome is the project Kale – Cultural Fortress. The cooperation is designed to offer vision and concepts that would transform this important part of downtown Skopje into a dynamic, attractive and strong gravitational cultural center.
